Abstract

Introduction: The relation between Helicobacter pylori with iron deficiency is being studied in recent years. The aim of this study is finding the relation between Helicobacter pylori with the rate of hemoglobin and serum ferritin.
Material and Methods: This study is an observational study and a cross-sectional type which is done analytical-descriptive against 262 patients suffering from anemia and for each patient the amounts of Hemoglobin, MCV, serum ferritine and Helicobacter IgG titre is calculated and then the relation between these amounts and Helicobacter is evaluated.
Results: In 147 patients (56%), Helicobacter IgG antibody was negative. In 78 cases (29.8%) the serum ferritin was less than 120 µgr/dlit. Using statistical analysis (Logistic regression) revealed that there was a statistical relation between the amount of ferrittin and the chance of strickened with Helicobacter in individuals whom their ferrittin rate was less than 12, 1.93% of patients whom their ferrittin is more than 12 and the enhance is significant. By the way it was cleared that there is not any significant statistical relation between MCV reduction and the chance of being strickened with Helicobacter.
Conclusion: Serum ferrittine rate in patients with Helicobacter pilory infection reduced and this reduce was significance. Previous studies in other countries indicated to this issue.

Abstract

Introduction: Regarding the fact that dissanitation in swimming pools can cause a lot of diseases such as Dermatophytosis in swimmers, this study is done with the aim of determination of Dermatophytic infections in covered public swiming pools of Qom city during 2004. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study 480 samples were taken from six public swimming pools. Samples were carried to the laboratory where they were passed through milipore filters. Filters then were trasfered to mycosel agar medium and incubated for three weeks at 25 Co. Data was analyzed using fisher test. Results: Among 480 samples, eleven Dermatophytes (8/8 percent) were isolated and indentified as follow: Trichophyton Mentagrophytes (2/4%), Trichophyton Tonsuranse (1/6%), Trichophyton Equinum (1/6%), Trichophyton Verrucosum (0/8%) Trichophyton Rubrum (0/8%), Trichophyton Schoenlinii (0/8%) and Epidermophyton Floccosum(0/8%). There was a significant relationship between prevalence of Dermatophytes and disregarding of personal hygiene standards (p=0/0001) and no significant relationship between residual Chlorine of swimming pools and prevalence of Dermatophytes. Conclusion: Because the majority of isolated Dermatophytes were anthropophilic and had been transferred from swimmers to the swimming pools it is necessary to care personal hygiene standards and provide good sanitation conditions in water and environment of the swimming pools.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Over 2 billion world people suffer from iron deficiency. Teenager girls are one of vulnerable groups in this area. Health education with various methods is a suitable tool for motivating and modifying incorrect function. The purpose of this research was determining the effect of health education program base on PRECEDE Model for controlling iron- deficiency anemia. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental and two-phase study was done on 72 students placed into case and control groups in 2007-8. Intervention was done in three sections with 45 minutes and 3 months after educational intervention was followed. Questionnaire base on PRECEDE Model parts and blood lab exams (Hb, Hct, Feritin) were data gathering tool. Data were analyzed by pair T- test, independent T- test, Mann- Whitney and Chi- square tests. Results: The mean score of knowledge (p<0.001) and attitude (p<0.001) (Predisposing factors), Using educational resources, taking place educational class and participating in educational programs (Enabling factors), encourage family and teachers (Reinforcing factors) and iron deficiency anemia preventive behaviors had a significant increase in the case group after the educational intervention. Conclusion: Above results indicate positive effect of educational intervention program base on PRECEDE Model and main components (Predisposing, Enabling, Reinforcing factors) in improving of iron deficiency anemia preventive behaviors in the study population.

Abstract

Background: Tension headaches are the most basic reasons for referring to physicians throughout the world. Iron anemia, on the other hand, is the most common type of anemia among women who are in productive age in the world. This study was done to investigate the relationship between vascular headaches and iron anemia and to see the effect of iron tablets administration on the treatment of these headaches in women who are in productive age. Materials and Methods: In this quasi-control study, 50 women in reproductive age who had iron anemia and vascular headaches, referring to the neurologic clinic of Vali-asr Hospital in Arak, were selected and treated with ferrous sulfate tablets for three months. For verifying the treatment, patients' hemoglobin was monitored after one month, and in case of any significant increases in this value, the patients discontinued participating in the study. The number of headache attacks and the number of analgesics used before, through and three months after beginning the administration of ferrous sulfate were noted for all of the patients. Results: The mean number of the headache attacks one month before treatment, during the treatment and three month after the treatment were 19.6±28 , 14.2±11.2 , 13.3±11.8, respectively (p=0.0001) . In addition, the mean number of used analgesics before the treatment, through the treatment and three month after the treatment were 30.1±14.1, 14.3±11.2, 13.1±16.1, respectively (p=0.0001). Conclusion: It seems that using iron tablets can be useful in treatment of vascular headaches.

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study is to assess antioxidative and pro-oxidative efficacy of ascorbate on serum albumin during iron-induced oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, albumin was placed in the oxidative system containing iron ions and different concentrations of ascorbate. To monitor albumin degradation, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed according to Laemmli procedure. Oxidative modification of albumin was demonstrated using a method for determination of carbonyl groups by 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Results: By applying the carbonyl assay, ascorbate showed a dual effect: initial pro-oxidative effect on albumin changed to an antioxidant one in a dose-dependent manner. Our findings showed prooxidant effects for ascorbate in low concentrations (0-100 µM) and antioxidant effects in higher concentrations (100-300 µM). Also, electrophoretic pattern of plasma proteins showed significant protein aggregations in the range of 35 to 45 kDa of MW and protein degradations in the range of 115 to 180 kDa. Conclusion: Ascorbate can produce reactive oxygen species and can also inhibit the production of these oxidants in the presence of iron ions as well. These findings may be directly applicable to oxidative states during the administration of ascorbate and may be important in preventing oxidative modifications of proteins in blood circulation and other biological fluids.

Abstract

Background: The presence of nitrate in drinking water causes various health and environmental problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of nitrate reduction by Fe/H2O2 process and adsorption on activated carbon. Materials and Methods: This experimental study investigated nitrate oxidation by advanced oxidation process of Fe°/FeІІ/FeШ/H2O2 at pH 2-10, nitrate concentrations of 50-300 mg/L. After adjusting the pH, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 g/L values of GAC, PAC, H2O2/GAC, and Fe/H2O2/GAC together with H2O2 at retention times of 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 minutes, respectively, were added and mixed. Results: At retention time of 10 minutes and 0.5 mL H2O2 and 1 g/L from Fe°, FeІІ, and FeІІІ, the removal efficacy was 88.5, 84 and 78%, respectively. At 50 mg/L nitrate and 0.5, 1, and 10 mg/L GAC concentrations, the removal efficacy was 56.5, 93.6, and 82.6%, respectively. The nitrate removal efficiency at pH=4 was approximately 50%, whereas at pH=3 with 30% efficacy, it increased to 80%. Conclusion: Modified Fe/H2O2 process with iron nano-particles and activated carbon adsorption can effectively reduce nitrate under optimal conditions. The use of activated carbon at a concentration of 1 g/L increased the removal efficiency of nitrate to 90%.

Abstract

Background: Solid waste is one of the environmental pollution. Therefore the aim of this study was to survey of knowledge, attitude and practice of student and teachers about weast management for developing methods of educational in Arak city.

Materials and Methods: This is a cross sectional and analytical study that was carried out on 1739 student and 149 teacher in school of Arak city in 2012. sampling with cluster and data collection with questionnaire including knowledge, attitude, practice and appropriate resource of education for waste management. Finally data analyzed with statistical tests.

Results: The mean knowledge and attitude student was 4.1±1.9 (out of 8) and was 20.63±5.9 (out of 35) respectively. Based on most educational methods for weast management viewpoint of student book 441 student (29% ) but impact of internet very low interest 487 (32%) of student. Moreover the most educational methods based on level of education significant difference was observed (p=0.001).

Conclusion: Due to a level of knowledge and attitude of student and accsses to educational resourse and huge of weaste in school educational program planned via book, teacher and peer education for student recommended.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Prolonged ischemia in organs with high metabolic rates such as brain and heart is associated with deleterious effects. Therefore, nutritive distribution through angiogenesis after ischemia is necessary for repairing damaged region of tissue. In this study, the effects of iron oxide nanoparticles and magnetic field on angiogenesis after ischemia reperfusion (IR) in rat model have been investigated.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, fifty male rats aged between 6 -7 weeks at the 220-250gr weight were purchased from Tehran University. Animals were categorized in 5 groups including sham (ischemia reperfusion model), control, iron oxide nanoparticles-treated, magnetic field-exposed, and combination therapy with iron oxide nanoparticles and magnetic field-exposed groups. Angiogenesis was evaluated in hippocampus of 5 groups after 4 days by H&E staining method. The expression of Vegfa gene was studied in 5 groups by Q-RT- PCR.
Findings: Iron oxide nanoparticles as well as the magnetic field induced angiogenesis during 4 days in animals after IR (p<0.05), but their combination therapy did not show any significant difference compared to sham group during 4 days. Upregulation of Vegfa gene was observed in iron oxide nanoparticles treated group and the magnetic field exposed group significantly (p<0.05) relative to ischemia reperfusion (IR) model. But overexpression of Vegfa gene in combination therapy group was not significant relative to ischemia reperfusion (IR) group.
Conclusion: It seems that iron oxide nanoparticles and magnetic field can separately be two effective methods for angiogenesis after ischemia reperfusion (IR).

Abstract

Background and Aim: Cancer is the second cause of death in children under fourteen years old. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiology and predisposing factors of childhood cancers.
Materials and Methods: This observational-descriptive study was performed on 82 children in the oncology department of Amir-kabir Hospital in Arak who were referred between 2011 and 2016. Data on age, sex, type of malignancy and predisposing factors were carried out by person interviews or patient records and were registered in checklist and analyzed.
Ethical Considerations: This study with research ethics code IR.ARAKMU.REC.2.46.87 has been approved by research ethics committee at Arak University of Medical Sciences.
Findings: The results showed that 56.1 percentage of patients were aged 0-5 years, 74.1 percentage were urban, 90.2 percentage were alive, 99 percentage were singleton, 92.7 percentage full term, 46.3 percentage of them were the first children and 87.9% of them had birth weight over 2500 g. There was no significant relationship between the delivery method and delivery problems, the sex of the patients, the environmental factors (such as consuming canned food, sausages, insecticide use, drug use during pregnancy and the rate of infectious diseases), However, there was a direct relationship between the increased age of parents and the high socioeconomic level with the risk of cancer.
Conclusion: The risk of childhood cancers in Markazi province is more related to genetic factors and the environmental factors causing cancers in children are less involved in this study.

Abstract

Background and Aim Thyroid diseases are among the most common endocrine disorders. Animal and human experiences indicate that iron deficiency disrupts thyroid metabolism. On the other hand, iron therapy can improve thyroid function and even decrease the dose of levothyroxine.
Methods and Materials In this randomized clinical trial, we selected 94 women with hypothyroidism by simple random sampling method and divided them into two equal groups by simple block sampling. At the beginning of the study, we measured and recorded T4, TSH, T3, and iron profiles (Serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, ferritin, Hemoglobin) in all patients. Then, the patients in the intervention group were treated with levothyroxine plus 100 mg oral iron daily for 8 weeks, and the patients in the control group were treated with levothyroxine only. After two months, we measured their T4, TSH, T3 levels and iron profiles in both groups again.
Ethical Considerations The Research Ethics Committee of Arak University of Medical Sciences approved this study (Research Ethics Code: 1396154). Also, the study has been registered at the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (Code: IRCT 20151114025031).
Results After 2 months, the TSH Mean±SD serum levels were found as 2.2±1.0 mIU/L and 2.9±1.1 mIU/L for the intervention and control group, respectively (P=0.04). Also, the serum Mean±SD level of T4 and T3 were found as 9.3±1.48 mcg/dL vs. 8.2±0.9 mcg/dL (P=0.01), and 1.6±0.3 ng/mL vs. 1.1±0.3 ng/mL (P=0.01), for two different groups, respectively. 
Conclusion Concurrent administration of iron supplementation with the usual dose of levothyroxine in patients with hypothyroidism decreases THS level and improves laboratory parameters and response to treatment.

Abstract

Introduction: A woman due to menstruation, pregnancy and poor iron intake and absorption it is prone to iron deficiency anemia and its effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of process-based treatment on anxiety in women suffering from iron deficiency anemia and generalized anxiety disorder.
Methods: It was performed by utilizing a single-case experimental design. In doing this, six female participants suffering from iron deficiency anemia were selected through purposive sampling and placed under the individual process-based therapy during nine 60-minute sessions. In the pre-treatment stage, the participants responded to Newman, Zueling, Kachin and Constantino's fourth version of the generalized anxiety disorder questionnaire and underwent clinical interviews. They also completed the Beck's depression inventory in the baseline stages and third, sixth and ninth sessions of the intervention and finally at the 3-month follow up stages. The data were analyzed by the method of visual analysis, stable change index and recovery percentage formula, and the effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated using the Ingram criteria.
Results: The results showed that the percentage of overall recovery in depression for the first to sixth participants in the intervention stage was 49/26، 50/54، 59/27, 76/20، 54/41 و 57/83 and in the follow-up stages was 70/10، 64/70، 75/93، 78/61، 77/57 و 84/93; respectively. Also, the percentage of overall recovery in the intervention and follow-up stages was 57/90 and 75/30; respectively indicating to a success in therapy.
Conclusions: Process-based therapy reduces depression of the research participants and it is suggested to be used as a method of treatment and complementary to medical treatment to remedy comorbid mental disorders and improve the general performance of people with anemia.
