Abstract

Background: Traditionally levels of cholesterol and triglyceride are used to identify individuals at risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study is examining the association of ApoA1 and ApoB with severity of coronary artery disease and whether these parameters are better predictor of CAD.

Materials and methods: This is a cross- sectional study. All patients that referred to ARAK amirallmomenin hospital and enrolled for coronary angiography was entered to study. Before angiography and after gathering informed consent, levels of apoA1 apoB, cholesterol, TG, LDL, VLDL, HDL and FBS were measured. The results of coronary angiography were reviewed by two experienced cardiologist separately. Severity of coronary artery disease involvement was determined by Gensini score (GS), the data were analyzed with statistical methods by SPSS software.

Results: There is a statistically significant correlation Between apoB and GS (r=0.127, p=0.047). Logistic regression model showed that among predictors for CAD entered model eg gender, age, cholesterol, TG, HDL, LDL , VLDL, ApoA1, ApoB and ApoB/Apo- A1 ratio, only ApoB and gender were proper predictors of coronary artery Disease( CAD) (p=0.002, , p=0.001). In comparison with angiography for diagnosis of CAD, ROC analysis represent that using ApoB can be useful test (p=0.047).

Conclusion: According to result of this study, using ApoB in addition to conventional parameters for assessing the patient at risk to having CAD would be reasonable and could be an independent risk factor for CAD.

Abstract

Background: Increased insulin resistance, inflammatory factors and parameters of oxidative stress are associated with the development of diabetes complications. This study was designed to determine the beneficial effects of synbiotic Gaz on insulin resistance, inflammatory factor and oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Materials and Methods: This randomized crossover double-blinded controlled clinical trial was performed among 62 diabetic patients aged 35-70 y. Subjects were randomly assigned to consume of either the synbiotic (n=62) or control Gaz (n=62) for 6 weeks. A 3-week washout period considered. The synbiotic Gaz was consisted of a probiotic viable and heat-resistance strain Lactobacillus sporogenes (1×107 CFU), 0.04 g inulin and 0.05 g stevia per 1 g as sweeteners' substances. Control Gaz (the same substance without probiotic bacteria and prebiotic inulin) was. Patients were received synbiotic and control foods in a 7 g package thrice a day. Fasting blood samples were taken at baseline and after 6-week intervention to measure insulin resistance, hs-CRP and biomarkers of oxidative stress.

Results: Consumption of synbiotic Gaz, compared with control, resulted in a significant decrease in serum insulin (p=0.02) and hs-CRP levels (p=0.008). Supplementation with synbiotic Gaz led also to a significant increase in plasma total glutathione (p<0.0001) compared to the control.

Conclusion: In conclusion, consumption of synbiotic Gaz for 6 weeks resulted in decreased levels of serum insulin, hs-CRP and increased levels of plasma total glutathione.

Abstract

Background: Factor XIII deficiency is an extremely rare, autosomal recessive coagulation disorder with estimated prevalence of 1/2000000 worldwide. This disorder represents with different clinical manifestations including, umbilical cord bleeding, recurrent abortion and CNS bleeding. CNS bleeding is a common but life threating complication of disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a common polymorphism of thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) occurrence of CNS bleeding in patients with severe factor XIII deficiency.

Materials and Methods: This case control study was performed on 34 patients with factor XIII deficiency and history of CNS bleeding and 36 patients with factor XIII deficiency but without CNS bleeding as control group. Initially all patients were molecularly analyzed for factor XIII deficiency, then both groups were assessed for common TAFI Thr325Ile polymorphism. Finally obtained data was analyzed by SPSS software.

Results: Molecular analysis of TAFI Thr325Ile polymorphism revealed that almost all patients with CNS bleeding (89%) had this mutation that in 67% of patients was homozygote. There is a significant relationship between Thr325Ile polymorphism in homozygote manner with incidence of CNS bleeding in factor XIII deficient (OR 18.9, 95% CI 3.8 to 95.1).

Conclusion: It seems that Thr325Ile polymorphism is a suitable prognostic factor in patients with severe factor XIII deficiency and this probably polymorphism increases risk of CNS bleeding about 20 fold.

Abstract

Background: Considering that pre-diabetes is one of disorders that increases developing of diabetes, this study was performed to investigate the effect of L-Arginine supplementation on antioxidant enzyme activity, total antioxidant capacity, and body composition in patients with pre-diabetes.

Materials and Methods: A double-blinded randomized clinical trial was performed on 46 pre-diabetic patients. Patients in intervention (n=23) and  placebo groups received  3g/day L-arginine and placebo (three 1gr L-arginine capsules), respectively for 8 weeks. Anthropometric, body composition, and dietary intake assessments, and also biochemical tests were done at baseline and end of study. Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC), glutathione peroxidase enzyme and superoxide dismutase activity were measured. Paired t-test, independent t-test and ANOVA were used to analyze quantitative variables.

Results: Thirty eight patients (19 subjects in each group) completed the study. After adjusting confounding factors, no significant difference in body composition, anthropometric indices and dietary intake was observed at the end of study (p<0.05 in all factors), but a significant difference in TAC level was observed in the intervention group at the end of study (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Supplemenation with 3gr/day L-arginine for 8 weeks led to raised serum TAC level without changes in body composition in pre-diabetic patients.

Abstract

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory activity of molecules secreted by decidual cells on dendritic cells (DCs) function in abortion-prone compared with non-abortion-prone mice.

Materials and Methods: The decidual cell supernatants (DS) were obtained from abortion and non-abortion mouse models. DCs were purified from CBA/J mice spleens and treated with antigen and DS. Treated DCs were injected into mice palms. After 5 days, draining lymph nodes were removed, cultured in the presence of cognate antigen, and proliferation of lymphocyte cells was measured by 3H-thymidin incorporation.

Results: Our results showed that immunosuppressive activity of DS from non-abortion-prone mice significantly decrease dendritic cells' ability to stimulate lymphocytes proliferation compared with DS from abortion-prone mice (Simulation index (SI) of 4.93 ± 0.34 versus 11.84 ± 0.79).We, also found that DS prepared from non-resorption sites compared with DS from resorption sites in abortion-prone mice had increased immunosuppressive activity on DC function (SI of 7.31 ± 1.02 versus 2.67 ± 0.49).

Conclusion: Due to our results, we concluded that immunomodulatory activity of molecules secreted within decidual tissue is different between abortion-prone and non-abortion-prone mice. Based on the key role of DCs in inducing fetomaternal tolerance, we claimed that these molecules, through modulation of DCs function, play crucial role on pregnancy outcome.

Abstract

Background: Multidrug resistance is the main reason for unsuccessful chemotherapy. The important reason of drug resistance is ATP dependent pumps shus as MDR1 that extrude drugs from the cell. MDR1 is high polymorphic. It seems that polymorphisms influent on gene expression and response to treatment. The aim of this study was investigation of C1236T polymorphism MDR1 gene and it’s association with response of treatment in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, C1236T polymorphism of MDR1 was investigated in 44 acute lymphoblastic leukemia childhood and 40 healthy individual by ARMS-PCR technique. Association of this polymorphism with response to treatment was also investigated. Data were analyzed using Chi-squre test and SPSS software. P values <0.05 were considered to be statistically significant.

Results: There was no significant difference in frequencies of C1236T polymorphism between patients and healthy group (p=0.876). Frequency of C1236T polymorphism of MDR1 between responder and non responder was not significant (p=0.304).

Conclusion: It seems that there is no correlation between C1236T polymorphism of MDR1 gene and response to treatment. So the role of C1236T polymorphism in gene expression MDR1 in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and response to treatment is still controversial.

Abstract

Background: Wolfram syndrome is a rare neurodegenerative autosomal recessive disorder. That occurs in association with diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, and optic nerve atrophy, hearing loss, urinary tract infection and nervous complication.

Case: The present report belong to a 24 years old girl who was effected by diabetes mellitus in 10 years old & has been effected by Diabetes insipidus, recurrent UTI, hearing loss and other type of disorders in 20 years old.

Conclusion: Strict control of blood glucose and regular fundoscopy, for early detection of optic atrophy are important. Step in management of this syndrome and quality of life is improved with hearing and vision aid tools.

Abstract

Background: Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone density and loss of structural integrity which can increase the risk of bone fracture and its side effects. In the recent studies, new evidences of the relationship between immune system such as TNF-&alpha and IL-17A and bone destruction have been accumulated. The aim of present study was to investigate serum level of TNF-&alpha and IL-17A in women with post-menopausal osteoporosis.

Materials and Methods: In this analytical study 40 women with post-menopausal osteoporosis and 10 healthy women were enrolled to the study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The serum level of TNF-&alpha and IL-17A were calculated by using ELISA method and compared between groups.

Results: The mean level of TNF-&alpha in case and control group was 957.7±479.01 and 418.09±176.7 respectively which in case group was significantly more than control group (p=0.001). The mean level of IL-17A in case and control group was 95.23±36.7 and 125.7±30.6 respectively which in case group was significantly less than control group (p=0.019).

Conclusion: The level of TNF-&alpha in women with post-menopausal osteoporosis was more than healthy women which can mention the roll of TNF-&alpha in pathogenesis of osteoporosis and potential therapeutic roll of anti TNF-&alpha agents but because of unclear roll of IL-17A in pathogenesis of osteoporosis we could not explain its mechanism in pathogenesis of osteoporosis. It seems more studies with regard to IL-17A roll in bone metabolism is required.

Abstract

Background: Occult hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is defined as the presence of HCV-RNA in liver or peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in the absence of detectable hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV) or HCV-RNA in the serum. Although occult HCV infection is less aggressive than classic chronic HCV infection, nevertheless it is important in management of hemodialysis (HD) patients. Occult HCV infection has been described in two different clinical settings: in patients with normal liver enzymes or in patients with abnormal values of liver enzymes. The aim of this study was to detect the occult HCV infection in hemodialysis patients with elevated liver enzymes.

Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was performed in hemodialysis patients referring to 3 dialysis units in Tehran. In 30 anti-HCV negative HD patients with elevated liver enzymes, presence of HCV-RNA in plasma samples was tested by Reverse Transcriptase-Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-nested PCR). In cases with negative anti-HCV and plasma HCV-RNA, HCV-RNA was checked in PBMC specimens by RT-nested PCR.

Results: A total of 30 HD patients with mean age 54.4± 14.1years and mean dialysis duration 81.2 ±64.4 months were enrolled in the study. All HD subjects were negative for HCV-RNA in plasma and occult HCV infection with RT-nested PCR method.

Conclusion: Occult HCV infection was rare in HD patients with elevated levels of liver enzymes.

Abstract

Background: Motivation is one of the most important tools to push faculty members to perform effectively and efficiently in the workplace is. This study is based on Herzberg's theory of motivating factors to consider requiring faculty at the University of Medical Sciences deals.

Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 168 faculty members of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, 102 persons conducting a completely free and informed, a 40-question questionnaire based on Herzberg's two-factor theory, design, a questionnaire. Data using t-test and Mann-Whitney U and indicators of central tendency and dispersion were analyzed by SPSS 16 software.

Results: Response rate to the questionnaires, 7.60, respectively. 5.24% of the faculty in the basic sciences and 5.74% at the clinical level of activity. Of "communication" and "progress and development", the motivation faculty have the greatest impact. Factors "physical condition" and "salary" have been less effective. Between the ages of faculty motivating factors, "nature", "responsibility and career" and "supervision and monitoring", there was a significant correlation. The relationship between work experience and of "salary" and "job security" was also significant.

Conclusion: Communication is one of the most important factors in increasing the motivation of faculty members in the physical conditions of work and wages are minimal impact in this area. With an aging faculty, salary, supervision and monitoring, and job security are more important motivation. In other words, with increasing age and work experience, academic expectations of the management of change and the proper evaluation of the activities of the officials do not have the decision-making, and because the quality of activities, good participate Ndah encouraged do not motivate members to create good will.

Abstract

Background: Cotonary artery illneses are the common heart illness that there is treatment methods now, many patients need the coronary artery bypass graft. Anxiety is a common phenomenon after all surgical operation. Anxiety in coronary artery bypass graft causes to increase metabolic rate, decrease immunity of body, and increases activity of heart coronary and gastrointestinal. This study was perfound to assess the effects of metatarsus foot reflexology on state anxiety levels after coronary artery bypass graft in Imam Ali Hospital Kermanshah.

Methods and Materials: This clinical trial included 88 patients that they were divided in to the intervention and control group based on the randomly. The intervention group received a 10 minute right foot massage one day on third and fourth day after coronary artery bypass graft and control group received no intervention, only at the time mentioned, score anxiety was measured with standard questionnaire spielberger.

Results: Patients state anxiety significanty decreased in the intervention group in the third day comparison with the control group, but no difference were not observed in the control group.

Conclusion: The finding of the study showed foot reflexology to be effective and simple that complication and damages are low that is used in reducing patients anxiety in treatment-health centers.

Abstract

Background: Remaining of crude oil in storage tanks usually lead to accumulation of oily sludge at the bottom of the tank which should be treated and disposed of in a suitable manner. In this research the feasibility of chemical oxidation with H2O2 and Fenton&#39;s reagent for removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from composted storage tank sludges was investigated.

Materials and Methods: The sludge was mixed with immature compost at various sludge to compost ratios including 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8 and 1:10 and composted for 82 days. Then, hydrogen peroxide and Fenton’s reagent were added to the composted mixture in six concentrations including 2%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% w w-1 for a period of 24 and 48 hr.

Results: TPH removal in composting reactors with the ratios of 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8 and 1:10 were 66.59, 73.19, 74.81, 80.20 and 79.91 percent, respectively. The mean TPH removal of 1:8 composted mixtures with 2%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% of oxidant concentrations were 1, 5.09, 19.37, 28.16, 34.37 and 38.05 percent, respectively. The highest removal efficiency was achieved in stepwise addition to the sludge. As well, increasing oxidation time from 24 to 48 hr had a little effect on TPH removal increase and the removal efficiencies of H2O2 and Fenton were nearly similar.

Conclusion: Chemical oxidation with hydrogen peroxide and Fenton as a post-treatment step is an acceptable process in TPH removal from bottom sludge of storage tanks.

Abstract

Background: Biosurfactants are amphiphilic biological compounds produced extracellularly by a variety of microorganisms. Because their use in various industries are of a particular importance. The aim of this study was to identify a strain of bacteria of the genus Bacillus Cereus biosurfactant producers and investigate the antibacterial effects of biosurfactant produced.

Materials and Methods: In this study, different samples of oil, water and soil contaminated with oil were prepared. Hemolytic activities, emulsification and measurement of surface tension were used and selected strains were identified by biochemical tests. The nature and effect of antibacterial biosurfactant were evaluated for strain selection.

Results: In this study, eighty eight bacterial strains were isolated. Among them, 24 strains were hemolytic activity. Among them, 14 strains have emulsification activity more than 70% and finally from among them four strains were able to convey to the surface tension of less than 40 mN/m. On the basis of biochemical tests, a strain selective in this study as B. cereus 43 strain, were identification and selection. The results of investigating the nature biosurfactant determined that the type of lipopeptide. Also, the produced biosurfactant has antibacterial activity against six bacterial infectious. The most sensitive and the most resistant bacteria than the impact of biosurfactant extract, of S. aureus PTCC1112 and of the Proteus mirabilis ATCC 2601 respectively. Also, the results of MIC, MBC showed that MIC extract were effective in a dilution of 63 mg/ml on S. aureus PTCC1112 and S.epidermidis ATCC 2405 and the MBC extract had the greatest effect in a dilution of 125mg/ml on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PTCC 1074 respectively.

 

Conclusion: Bacillus Cereus 43 had high potential in reducing the surface tension and biosurfactant extracted had high antibacterial effects. Therefore, Frequency of potential has for applications of biotechnology and the environment.

Abstract

Background: Intraocular pressure (IOP) rise is the most common complication of Nd YAG laser posterior capsulotomy, and the aim of this study was to compare the effect of oral acetazolamide versus topical Co-biosopt in preventing IOP rise following Nd YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was done on 200 patients who underwent laser Nd: YAG capsulotomy. First group received oral acetazolamide 250 mg q 6h and placebo drops q 8h and second group received Co-biosopt) timolol 0/5% and dorzolamide 2%) drops q 8h and oral placebo capsule q 6h. IOP was measured before and 24 hours after laser capsulotomy.

Results: Mean IOP of right and left eye 24 hours after capsulotomy in the acetazolamide group was significantly decreased as compared to the previous (p=0.001) and in Co-Biosopt group the values 24 hours after capsulotomy was significantly decreased as compared with the previous in right and left eye (p=0.001).

Conclusion: According to oral acetazolamide side effects and desirable IOP reduction with Co-Biosopt that recently entered to Iran’s market and have typical domestic, this medication can be an option for preventing IOP rise after laser capsulotomy in a patient with posterior capsular opacification.

Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a widespread neurodegenerative disorder, which affects approximately 1% of the world population. It is a multifactorial and a highly heritable disease to which genetic factors contribute up to approximately 80%. Nowadays, multitude of genes have been discovered that relate to this disorder mostly by affecting the performance and levels of neurotransmitters in neural systems. Since PAI-1 is a considerable gene in the performance of neural systems, the present study dealt with the relationship between -675 4G/5G polymorphism in PAI-1 gene and schizophrenia among Iranian patients.

Materials and  Methods: This case-control study was carried out on 106 blood samples collected from individuals suffering from schizophrenia and 122 healthy controls. DNA was extracted from the samples and the frequency of the polymorphisms was analyzed using ARMS-PCR method. Finally, the products were detected on 2% agarose gel electrophoresis.

Results: The analysis of the data for -675 4G/5G polymorphism showed that 17.9% of the patients and 1.6% of the controls were mutant homozygous and 65.1% of the patients and 45.9% of controls were heterozygous. Also, 17% of the patients and 52.5% of the controls were normal homozygous.

Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism and the incidence of schizophrenia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in Iran that assesses the frequency of the polymorphism among Iranian patients. However, further studies with more samples are necessary.

Abstract

Background: Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation by a tapeworm of the genus Echinococcus. Man is an intermediate or accidental host of this parasite, and is infested by consuming contaminated plants or vegetables, or by contact with dogs. The larvae travel through the gut wall and 60-75% are filtered by the liver, and a few travel directly to the lungs to produce a hydatid cyst there. Growth of hydatid cysts has been reported in the spleen, muscles, bones, and brain. Hydatid cyst embolism to peripheral limb arteries is extremely rare.

Case: A 41-year-old gravided woman presented with sudden pain, erythema and warming of the olden infra-inguinal mass which existed from 1 year ago. The notable findings at physical examination included 40*20 mm diameter soft mass with warming and erythema in 4 cm below inguinal ligament of right lower limb. She didn’t mentioned any previous history hydatid cyst. Intraoperatively, Percutaneous aspiration of the mass was performed which demonstrate white turbid fluid. after the surgical incision we saw the white colored subcutaneous hydatid cyst and completely remove it and send it to pathological examination which confirmed hydatid cyst diagnosis. further liver ultrasound and chest radiography hasn’t shown any evidence of liver or lung involvement.

Conclusion: Cystic echinococcosis may affect all organs, but mostly settles in the liver and lungs. We do not have data on the means by which the larvae of echinococcosis reach the inguinal area without liver and lung involvement. Considering the anatomy of the groin and its lymphatic tissue, we can make an assumption about how the hydatid cysts settle in the groin space. Although it occurs rarely, larvae in the gastrointestinal tract may pass to the lymphatic circulation, and then settle in the groin space through the rich lymphatic flow of inguinal area.

Abstract

Background: Peripheral nerve injures are common in clinical practice that includes from compression injury to complete disruption of nerve trunk. After injury nerves can grow and repair spontaneously, early end to end anastomosis is first choice for repair but only 50% of nerve fiber would be physiologically accurate and effective, thus several techniques for repair of nerve injury are introduced including combination of nerve transplant with silicon tubes, use of biologic and synthetic tubes for nerve conduit.

Materials and Methods: In this Exprimental study, 20 rats with the same weight were selected and kept in the same condition .The left sciatic nerve of them was cut and were divided in two groups.In the first group the facial flap method for repair of nerve injury was used .In the second group vein conduit method was used as standard method. Histological nerve repair was assessed after 45 days and the intact right sciatic nerve was used as control.

Results: Repair of nerve injury in proximal, mid and distal portion of nerve in facial flap method was more effective than vein conduit (P<0.05). Repair of nerve injury in proximal, mid and distal portion had no difference compared with control group (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Repair of nerve injury with facial flap method is more effective than standard method and can be used as a new method for nerve repair.

Abstract

Background: Pediatricians frequently confront with elevated body temperature in children and subsequent anxious parents. They practice several approaches in management of fever. A recently addressed issue is administration of alternating doses of acetaminophen and Ibuprofen. This method is relatively common , despite lack of sufficient evidence in this field.

Materials and Methods: This study is a randomized clinical trial. A total of 240 children, aged 6 months to 12 years suffering from gastroenteritis was recruited in this research. Children were classified in 3 groups. First group received Acetaminophen, second group received Ibuprofen and third group were treated with acetaminophen – Ibuprofen every other day alternately.

Results: 240 child were taken apart in this research . 112 ones were female (46.66%) and 128 were male (53.33%). The mean time of lowering fever in the first group was 2.07 days. This figure in the second and third groups were 1.82 and 1.87 respectively. Average doses in the first, second and third groups were (in order) 9, 8.17 and 7.13 doses. Medication in the first group minimum effectiveness rather than two other groups.

Conclusion: The alternating regimen of Acetaminophen – Ibuprofen is more effective than monotherapy in reduction of fever in infants and children between 6 months to 12 years.

Abstract

Background: Cancer stem cells are subpopulation of cancer cells that show self-renewal potential and the capacity to differentiate into diverse populations comprising a tumor. One of the characteristics of CSCs is their ability to form floating spheroids under anchorage-independent conditions in a serum-free media. The aim of this study was isolation of colon cancer stem cells by sphere formation assay and characterization of them in human colonic adenocarcinoma HT-29.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, colon CSCs markers including CD44 and EPCAM in spheroid and HT-29 cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. The expression levels of stemness genes in both spheroid and HT-29 cells were investigated using real-time PCR. Tumorigenic potential of spheroid cells was evaluated using in vivo xenografts assay.

Results: Our data showed over 92% of spheroids were CD44+/EpCAM+, while HT-29 cells only have expressed 37% of CD44/EpCAM markers. In compared with the HT-29 cells, expression levels of ‘‘stemness’’ genes, like Sox2, Oct4, Nanog, C-myc, and Klf4 were significantly increased in spheroid cells (p< 0.05). Further, As little as 2500 spheroid cells were sufficient to obtain tumor growth in nude mice, while 1x106 of HT-29 cells was needed to form tumor.

Conclusion: Our data suggest that spheroid formed by colon cancer cell lines highly enriched in CSCs and showed increasing expression of stemness genes and tumorigenic in nude mice.

Abstract

Background: Considering the increased activity of hypothalamic orexinergic neurons due to morphine administration, and its extensive projections to the hippocampus, it is probable that morphine effect on CA1 neuronal function is mediated by orexinergic system. So the effect of hippocampal orexin-1 receptors (OX1R) blockade on CA1 baseline synaptic response and short term synaptic plasticity was investigated.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, animals received morphine 10 mg/kg/12h/(SC) for 10 days. SB-334867-A, OX1R antagonist (0.5&mug/0.5 &mul), was microinjected intrahippcampally for OX1R inhibition before each morphine injection. Baseline synaptic response and short term synaptic plasticity were evaluated by field potential recording. fEPSP was recorded from CA1 following Schaffer collaterals stimulation. After Input/Output construction, short term synaptic plasticity was induced by paired pulse stimulations.

Results: Chronic use of morphine did not affect the baseline synaptic response (p>0.05). SB- 334867-A microinjection in CA1 did not have any effect on baseline synaptic response in morphine dependent rats. Morphine increased paired pulse index (PPI) at 80 ms inter pulse interval (IPI, p<0.05). SB-334867-A pretreatment did not affect this morphine induced PPI change.

Conclusion: The results suggest that orexin-1 receptors (OX1R) do not mediate the effect of morphine on baseline synaptic response and short term synaptic plasticity in CA1 area of the hippocampus.
