Abstract

Introduction: Impressive  research  demonstrates   the importance  of  essential  fatty  acids  for  many  physiological  and  bahavioral  mechanisms  in  both  human  and  animals.  Essential  fatty  acids  must  be  supplied  via  the  diet.  In  this  study  we  assessed  the  dietary  effects  of  cis  and  trans  fatty  acids  on  seizures  induced  by  pentylenetetrazol  in  rats.
Materials  and  Methods:  In this  study  animals  were  divided  into  four  groups.  In  the  test  groups  cis, trans  or  cis  and  trans  fatty  acids  were  add  to  the  standard  foods  of  rats  and  in  control  group  only  standard  food  was  dietary  administrated. After  one  month  kindling  was  established  in  rats  with  PTZ  in  subconvulsive  dose (45 mg/kg). convulsing  activities  were  monitored  for  20  min.
Results: Results  showed  that  there  was  no  meaningful  difference  between  rat  groups  receiving  cis, trantary  administration  of  cis  and  trans  fatty  acids  had  no  effect  on  penylenetetrazol  kindling  in  rats.s  or  cis  and  trans  fatty  acids  in  their  standard  food.
Conclusion: It  was  concluded  that  dietary  administration  of  cis  and  trans  fatty  acids  had  no  effect  on  pentylenetetrazol  kindling  in  rats.

Abstract

Introduction: Studies showed that following spontaneous epilepsy in rats, the permeability of CA1 region of Hypocampus to calcium is increased. In this study the role of voltage dependent calcium channels on the development of kindling induced by Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) was investigated in rats.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study rats were divided into two groups. In the test group, Verapamil (calcium channel blocker) was injected in the Hippocampus (4 g/4 min). After 20 minutes kindling was established by PTZ in subconvulsive dose (37.5 mg/kg ip). Convulsing activities were monitored for 20 min. The control group was the same age and undergone the same procedure exept for the injection, in which ACSF was injected without Verapamil.
Results: Verapamil significantly (p<0.01) reduced the number of needed stimulations to progress from stage 0 to 5 of the convulsion and also significantly (p<0.05) prolonged the fifth stage of seizure.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that interahippcampal injection of Verapamil facilitated the Pentylenetetrazol kindling in rats but had inhibitory effects on kindled animals.

Abstract

In this study the dietary effect of cis and trans fatty acids on seizures induced by Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) in second generation of rats is studied. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study animals were divided into four groups. In the three case groups cis, trans, or cis+trans fatty acids were added to the standard food of rats and in control group only standard food was dietary administrated. After one month, kindling was established in rats with PTZ in subconvulsive dose (45mg/kg i.p.). Convulsing activities were monitored for 20 minutes. Five stages of convulsing activities were observed. If after three consecutive sessions the animal was in the fifth stage, it was considered as a kindled animal. Data was analyzed using K-S, t, Tukey tests and analysis of variance. Results: Results showed that the convulsion stage in trans group was significantly more than the others. Also it was found that duration of the fifth stage in trans group was significantly more than control and cis groups. Conclusion: Results suggest that, administering sis and trans fatty acids have some effects on PTZ induced kindling in second generation of the rats who were kindled before. More severe seizure and longer duration of seizure was seen in trans group comparing to cis

Abstract

Introduction: Many research demonstrate the effect of margarine trans fatty acids on many physiological mechanisms in both human and animals. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of margarine oil on reproduction in Wistar rat. Materials and Methods: ‏This is an experimental study in which 46 Wistar female and male rats were divided into 4 groups. Male and female rats in group 1 were fed by 3% Margarine oil and standard food, in group 2 only female rats and in group 3 only male rats had Margarine oil with the standard food. Male and female rats in group 4 (as control group) had only standard food. Administration was started one month pre mating and continued during mating, gestation and lactation periods. After delivery, the pups were assessed for overall number, sex ratio, body weight, and mortality. One way analysis of variance was used for data avalysis. Results: ‏Results showed that weight and female ratio of pups were significantly increased in group 2 as compared to group 1 and control. Also the comparison of pups’ mortality in the four groups showed that pups mortality was increased in group 2 as compared to the other groups. On the other hand there was no significant difference in number of pups in the four groups. Conclusion: The results showed that dietary Margarine oil administration to female rats can significantly increase weight, ratio of female pups and mortality of pups.

Abstract

Introduction: In this study the effect of extracellular trans zinc and voltage sensitive calcium channels on different aspects of learning and memory has been investigated. Materials and Methods: This is an experimental study in which the effect of a calcium channel antagonist (Verapamil) and zinc chelator (Ca-EDTA), on passive avoidance learning (shuttle box apparatus) has been examined by intraperitoneal administration of defferent doses of these drugs. Data was analyzed using one way analysis of variance. Results: Result of intraperitoneal injection of 100 milimolar Ca-EDTA indicated that it has no effect on the acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval of passive avoidance learning. Verapamil (100 and 150 micrograms) as a L-type voltage gated calcium channel antagonist, decreased acquisition and consolidation but not retrieval of passive avoidance behaviour. These effects were dose dependent. The simltaneous effect of Ca-EDTA and verapamil was also studied. Ca-EDTA (100milimolar) and verapamil (100 micrograms) have negative effects on consolidation of passive avoidance learning. Conclusion: Probably, common mechanisms are involved in acquisition and consolidation of passive avoidance learning, and zinc and calium ions play interactive roles in this aspect.

Abstract

Background: pentylenetetrazole Kindling is widely used as a model for epileptogenesis. The achievement of kindling criterion is known to require repeated drug injection during time to develop. In this article a series of experiments aimed to examin the hypothesis that after 4 primary injections only time is needed to induced kindling in wistar rats. Methods and Materials: In this experimental research, 32 male Wistar rats were divided in two groups. Control Group were kindled by repeated injections of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ 37.5 mg/kgi.p. 48 h interval), in case group were done 4 repeated injections of pentylenetetrazole and have 32 days time lapse, at the end of experiment two groups received same dose of PTZ simultaneously and seizure parameters were assessed. Data were analyzed using student’s t-test and one way ANOVA and Turkey’s test. Results: Results showed there isn’t significant differences in seizure parameters such as seizure stage (control 4.75±0.26, case 4.75±0.29), stage 2 latency (control 165±16.6, case 216±38.68), stage 5 latency (control 2.13±0.38, case 3.47±0.64) and stage 5 duration (control 21.15±2.42, case 23.42±1.20) between two groups. Conclusion: Resuits of this experiment introduces the new critical time window for PTZ kindling.

Abstract

  

  Background: Although the roles of steroid hormones in the activation and maintenance of reproductive function are proved well, emerging evidence indicated that these steroids influence on performance of learning and memory. These effects are complex and vary with task, gender, and age, as well as the regimens of steroid exposure. This study was carried out in order to assess the role of progesterone administration in newborns rats on Morris water maze learning ability after adolescence.

  Methods and Materials : This experimental study was carried out on 36 newborns Wistar rats. Rats were divided randomly into 6 groups female progesterone, male progesterone, female sesamoide, male sesamoid rats and male and female control rats. Progesterone groups were treated with a single injection of progesterone (100 mg/kg) and sesamoid groups were received the same volume of sesamoid oil as the progesterone vehicle in day 1 or 2 after brith, 60 days later, spatial memory ability was determined in Morris water maze.

  Results : The results of this study show that water maze learning can enhance by administration of sesamoid oil in newborn female pups in compared to progesterone and control groups (p<0.05). In addition, adding progesterone to sesame oil reduce water maze learning to control level.

  Conclusion: The hypothesis that progesterone impaired spatial reference memory in female rats was supported by this experiment.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Misconceptions of mental models are phenomena that are variance with accepted scientific models. Purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of misconception about half life and concentration of insulin hormone in students of Arak university of medical sciences. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study 153 undergraduates in medicine and nursing – midwifery faculties of Arak university of medical sciences in 2009, were asked to answer to two questions about half life and concentration of insulin hormone. Results: The prevalence of misconception about half life of insulin hormone in medical, nursing and midwifery students were 75%, 80% and 85%, respectively, and prevalence of misconception about insulin concentration in blood were 31%, 26% and 20%, respectively. Conclusion: Misconceptions about insulin half life and concentration exist in high percent of students and it is necessary to correct the teaching pattern.

Abstract

Background: Nutrition assessment is a routine method for determining the nutritional needs of individuals, especially for vulnerable groups (women, infants, and children). One of the important criteria for assessment of nutritional status is determining the concentration of a nutrient after its intake. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 80 lactating mothers were selected from private and public hospitals in Tabriz. Data gathered through the questionnaire included general information concerning lactating mothers and also their nutritional diet. Since vitamin A and beta-carotene were measured through Karr-Price method, vitamin A and beta-carotene concentrations were measured at 620 nm wavelength. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between retinol intake and colostrum retinol of lactating mothers (p≤0.01) (r = 0.28). Also, retinol intake showed a positive and significant correlation with total vitamin A (retinol equivalent) in colostrum (p≤0.002) (r= 0.33). Conclusion: Daily retinol and beta-carotene intake affect retinol of colostrum which its proper concentration in mother’s milk can play an important role in better function of this vitamin for both mother and child.

Abstract

Background: Previous studies in Iran and around the world have indicated the high rate of medicines use. In recent years, medicine use has continued to rise in spite of attempts made by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education in Iran. Therefore, it seems that in addition to the reasons considered in previous studies, there are other reasons for this problem in Iran. One of the parameters involved in this problem is the high medicine use among the clinical staff. Thus the aim of this study is to compare medicine use among clinical and non-clinical staff members. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, information about the monthly use of medicines was obtained by means of a questionnaire administered to eight groups of clinical and non-clinical members: first-year medical students, first-year non-medical students, interns of medicine, forth-year non-medical students, general physicians, specialists, academic members with M.Sc, and academic members with PhD degrees. Results: The results showed that medicine use decreased with increase in education level in both groups. In addition, the comparison of medicine use between clinical and non-clinical groups showed that there is not a significant difference for most medicines among the first- and second-year students but medicine use significantly increased among general physicians and specialists compared to the control groups. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that medicine use among clinical staff should be considered in controlling medicine use in Iran.

Abstract

Background: Sumatriptan is a serotonin agonist. Hippocampal receptors contribute to the serotonergic control of learning. It seems that sumatriptan can also affect learning through serotonin receptors. Thus, this study was performed to investigate the effect of sumatriptan on cellular mechanisms of learning in male rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, male Wistar rats were kept in standard conditions in the Animal Laboratory of the Department of Physiology, Arak University of Medical Sciences. After doing the surgical procedure and locating the electrodes in the CA1 region of hippocampus, synaptic transmission and long-term potentiation were measured, and the effect of three doses of sumatriptan on these parameters was compared to the control group. Results: Sumatriptan could significantly inhibit the effect of tetanic stimulation on long-term potentioation in the CA1 region of hippocampus, as compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference in the synaptic transmission between the sumatriptan and control groups. Conclusion: This results show that sumatriprtan can probably impair learning and memory through inhibition of LTP in the CA1 region of hippocampus.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Extensive prevalence of myocardial infraction, and an increase of 36% in total deaths due to it by 2020, and attention to the causes and methods of alternative therapy is very important. There are different ways in treating these patients that endurance training is one of them. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of incremental endurance training on serum levels of TSP-1 and MMP-1 in male Wistar rats with myocardial infarction.
Materials and Methods: In this controled experimental study with control group, 20 rats weighing 230 ±30 g (8-week-old) were randomly divided into incremental endurance training and control, after induction of infarction with Isoproteronol (150 mg/kg). The training group performed an 8-week training session (3 sessions a week, for 20 to 50 minutes at 12 to 18 meters per minute).Then, 24 hours later, the venous blood sample was collected to evaluate serum concentrations of TSP-1 and MMP-1 and transferred to the laboratory. Independent t-test was used to analyze the data at a significant level of p <0.05 to Graphed Pad software.
Ethical Considerations: This study with research ethics code IR.IAU.ARAK.REC.1397.007 was approved in Research Ethics Committee of Islamic Azad University, Arak branch, Iran.
Findings: The results showed that endurance training significantly increased serum MMP1 levels (p = 0.048) in rats with myocardial infraction, while there was no significant effect (p = 0.092) on the exercise program in serum TSP-1 levels.
Conclusion: the result of this study suggests that increasing endurance training may increase MMP-1 in rats with myocardial infraction, which can play an important role in angiogenesis and replacement of capillaries.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Epilepsy is a common brain disorder. Brain function can be affected by the intestinal microflora. The intestinal microflora have a major role in modulating immune responses, producing essential metabolites and mediating neurotransmitters. Antibiotics can affect and reduce these roles and functions by eliminating the intestinal microflora. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intestinal natural micro flora removal on seizure susceptibility and seizure behavior modification with the use of probiotics in male Wistar rats.
Methods & Materials: This study was performed on 32 male Wistar rats with weight range 200-250 gr. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: 1. Control group; 2. Antibiotic group; 3. Probiotic group and 4. Antibiotic + probiotic group. To remove the microflora, antibiotics (neomycin, ampicillin, and metronidazole) for three weeks and for replacement of microflora, probiotics (Lactobacilli casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum) for four weeks were administered. Seizures were performed by intraperitoneal injection of pentylentrazole. The microflora was examined by the MRS Agar medium and the Pure Plate method. The data were statistically analyzed in Graph Pad Prism V. 8.
Ethical Considerations: This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Arak University of Medical Sciences (Code: IR.ARAKMU.REC.1395.176).
Results: The use of antibiotics lead to decrease the number of intestinal bacteria (P<0.0001), increased the severity and stability of seizure stages (P<0.05) and decreased the time delay of seizure onset (P<0.05) compared to the control group. Probiotic consumption by modifying the intestinal microflora (P<0.0001) reduced the severity of seizure and increased the time delay of seizure onset (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Elimination of microflora has the potential to induce seizures, which can be compensated by administration of probiotics.
