Abstract

Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men which its incidence rate and associated mortality and morbidity are on the rise. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of prostate cancer in Fars province between 2003 and 2008 years. Materials and Methods: In this epidemiological study, using Fars province cancer registry data, the incidence rates were calculated per 100,000 people and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) was measured by direct method using the world standard population. Data were analyzed by SPSS, version 16, and Microsoft Excel, version 2007. Cochrane Armitage Test for linear trend was used for evaluation of the incidence trend by running Winpepi software. Results: Over a 6-year period, 1212 cases were recorded in Fars province. The ASR of prostate cancer in these six years was 4.69, 7.16, 15.09, 14.04, 16.65 and 16.02, respectively, which revealed significantly increasing trends. The highest incidence rate was observed in 80 and upper age group. Conclusion: The ASR of prostate cancer in Fars province is significantly lower than other parts of the world, especially in more developed countries. This can be due to absence of screening programs and/or cancer registry.

Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome, a concurrence of overweight and abdominal fat distribution, disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism, mild dyslipidemia and hypertension is among the most important issues that man deals with, in today's world. Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, can confer a health benefit on the host. The aim of the present study was to review the clinical evidence available regarding the role of probiotics in improvement of disorders associated with metabolic syndrome.

Materials and Methods: In this research, clinical trials performed between 2000-2014 were searched in two databases, Pubmed and ScienceDirect. In both databases “Probiotics”, “metabolic syndrome” and each of its elements were used as the key words.

Results: Probiotics may reduce body weight through manipulating the gut flora. Through reducing inflammation and immune-regulation, probiotics decrease insulin resistance. They also improve lipid profile through reducing cholesterol absorption and producing short chain fatty acids, as well as deconjugating bile acids and converting cholesterol to coprostanol. Moreover, probiotics have been suggested to have a hypotensive effect through release of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides, through proteolytic action. 

Conclusion: Although some clinical trials have failed to obtain beneficial effects of probiotics on metabolic syndrome related situations, a majority of the studies have shown positive results for these microorganisms in this regard. Thus, probiotics can be looked upon as a novel approach when either prevention or alleviation of metabolic syndrome is aimed.

Abstract

Abstract
Background: High morbidity and limited therapies of hepatic fibro genesis are important factor for better understanding the molecular mechanisms of the disease. Advances in the understanding of the molecular behavior of hepatic stellate cells (HSC) allow the progress of a field dedicated to anti-fibrotic therapy. Melanoma differentiation associated gene-7 (IL-24/mda-7) as a gene induced during terminal differentiation in human melanoma cells, but the inflammatory response of cells to IL-24/mda-7 is not entirely cleared.
Materias and Methods: LX-2 cells (a human hepatic stellate cell) were treated by leptin (positive control), media (control negative), or were transfected by empty plasmid and pcDNA3.1/mda-7. The inflammatory state was evaluated through measuring the mRNA expression level of inflammatory molecule, IL-1β. The role of IL-24/mda-7 modulation on inflammatory response was assayed using SOCS1 and SOCS3 gene expressions.
Results: The expression levels of IL-1β, SOCS1 and SOCS3 were compared in LX-2 cell line groups. The expression of the IL-1β in the transfected cells was higher than the control cell, but it was not significant. The results indicated that the expressions of SOCS1 and SOCS3 were up-regulated following pcDNA 3.1/mda-7 transfection into LX-2 cells compared to control plasmids (p=0.0179, p=0.0428).
Conclusion: The endogenous IL-24/mda-7 exhibited a significant modulatory effect on stellate cells. Therefore, IL-24/mda-7 and relevant signaling pathways could be employed as a target for fibrosis treatment.
