Abstract

Introduction: Gold  the  valuable  metal  is  chemically  considered  one  of  the  most  less  active  metals.  The  anti-inflammatory  effects  of  drugs  containing  gold (sodium  aurothiomalate) came  into  notice  of  the  scientists  in  1930.  These  compounds  were  able  to  suppress  the  joints  and  synovial  membrane  inflammation  induced  by  infectious  or  chemical  agents.  Following  these  treatment  methods  their  side  effects  induced  this  conception  to  the  scientists  for  the  first  time  to  evaluate  the  amount  of  gold  in  the  human  body  just  after  treatment  with  gold.  This  research  has  analyzed  the  gold  amount  in  biological  fluids  in  males  and  females  bodies  of  the  Thehran  citizens with  different  conception, because  none  of  them  have  received  gold  via  oral  or  injective  drugs  and  their  contact  with  gold  has  been  as  jewelry  or  business  instrument.
Material  and  method: Analysis  of  gold  in  this  research  has  been  done  by  Atomic  absorption  and  80  Tehranian  citizen  among  patients  referring  to  clinics  of  different  areas  of  Tehran  and  if  they  have  been  conformed  to  participate  in  this  research  has  voluntarily  cooperated  to  give  160 n blood  and  urine  specimens  during  year  1992.
Results: It  is  revealed  in  this  research  that  the  mean  amount  of  gold  in  non-pregnant  women  is  232  ng/ml  and  this  amount  for  non  jeweler  men  is  280  ng/ml  which  is  more  than  the  amount  of  this  for  western  people. For  example  this  amount  is  0.159  ng/100cc  in  blood  for  England  which  is  much  lesser  than  this  amount  for  tehranian  citizens.  For  statistical  evaluation  non  parametric  statistical  method  (mann-whitney  U-test)  is  used.
Conclusion: Long  term  contact  with  gold  for  men  not  only  do  not  increases  the  blood  gold  but  also  declines  it. In  women  the  increase  in  time  and  the  amount  of  skin  surface  contact  with  gold  is  synchronize  with  increase  of  the  blood  gold  and  also  is  revealed  that  the  pregnancy  in  women  increases  the  amount  of  gold  in  blood.

Abstract

Introduction: At present, bone graft is unavoidable. In fact although among the all probable bone grafts, the autograft is the best choice, but because of some situations like two coincidence surgery upon one individual, size limitation of autografts (its impossible to get a big piece of graft from patient) increasing the bloodshed contingency, infection etc, made specialist to think about the possible substitution the allograft.
Materials and Methods: Seventeen Newzealandian rabbits were divided into four groups. The graft generator group consisted of one rabbit which was genetically different from other groups. The sham group composed of three rabbits which round autografts about 4 mm in diameter from their tibia were exchanged between rights and left tibias. These grafts were not deantigenized and a 4 mm vacant hole was created to see if it will repair spontaneously within three months. The control group consisted of three rabbits received a round 4 mm tibial autografts which double deantigenization process were done over them. The test group composed of 10 rabbits, received corticocancellous (intramembranous) allografts in left tibia and corticocancellous (endocondral). Allograft in right tibia all grafts were bearing the double deantigenization process.
Results: The rate of prosperity for CCl grafts was 80% and for CCE grafts was 60%.In sham group, healing process was extremely fast (in eight weeks).
In control group, healing process was done slower until six weeks but after 12 weeks it was compensated. The vacant holes were not repaired even after three months. Statistically, there was a meaningless difference between the rates of prosperity in both groups of grafts.
Conclusion: According to statistical assays, although the prosperous numbers of CCl were more than CCE grafts but this difference was meaningless. In the basis of histological assessments if the velocity of healing process is important, the CCI grafts are recommended

Abstract

Background: There is priority for evaluation of micronutrients (vitamin A) in the world, especially in develpoing countries like Iran. Vitamin A has an essentiall role in growth, reproduction, and maintenace of epithelial cells. Vitamin A, especially retinoic acid,  acts like a hormone for gene expression. Vitamin A is necessary for growth of bones and immune system. The role of vitamin A in reducing mortality rates of neonates is well recognized. The aim of research is to evaluate this micronutrient (vitamin A) and the rate of transportation from mother to fetus and its positive effects on birth weight.

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, 90 pregnant mothers were selected from private and public hospitals in Arak. Data were gathered through a questionnaire including general information concerning pregnant mothers and also their nutritional diet. The analysis of dietary intake was done by Nutritionist IV software. The measurements of serum and cord blood retinol samples were carried with reverse phase HPLC. Data analysis was done by Pearson correlation.

Results: The results indicated a positive and significant correlation between cord blood retinol of mothers and birth weight of neonates (r=0.22) (p&ge0.05). There was not a significant correlation between serum retinol of the mothers and birth weight of the neonates. Also, there was no significant correlation between retinol intakes of the mothers and birth weight of the neonates.

Conclusion: Improvement of the retinol status of mothers has an effective role in normal birth weight of neonates.

Abstract

Background: Saffron (Crocus Sativus) petals consist of, glycosides, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Due to the increasing use of medicinal plants in treatment of diseases and identifying their side effects on various organs, this study is to evaluate the effects of Crocus Sativus petals on biochemical blood parameters in male rats.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 30 male Wistar rats with the mean body weight of 215±15 g were randomly assigned into five groups of 6 animals each. Control group received normal saline (10 ml/kg) and treatment groups received 75, 150, 220 and 450 mg/kg body weight of saffron petals extract, for 14 days. Body weight measured in days 0, 7, and 14. At the end of experiment, serum levels of liver function marker enzymes such as AST and ALT, total proteins, albumin, creatinine, cholesterol and triglyceride were assessed.

Results: Compared to control group, ethanol extract of saffron petals significantly increased serum albumin and also significantly decreased levels of serum cholesterol and AST (p<0.05). No significant changes were observed on serum total proteins, creatinine, ALT, triglyceride levels and body weight in control and saffron groups (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Increase in levels of albumin and decrease in liver enzymes may indicate the lack of liver damage. Reduction in cholesterol which is probably due to flavonoid extracts of saffron and no effect on body weight can be beneficial in the use of saffron petals.

Abstract

Background : Hand eczema (HE) is a common skin disease which often needs long term treatment.. There are several reports about the efficacy of topical doxepin in the treatment of pruritic dermal diseases. This study was undertaken to compare the efficacy and safety of 5% doxepin cream and clobetasol 0.05% versus clobetasol 0.05% alone in the treatment of hand eczema.

Materials and Methods: a randomized double blind placebo-controlled, study was carried out during years of 2011-2012.In total 70 patients with moderate to severe hand dermatitis were selected randomly to be treated with either the doxepin 5% cream+ clobetasol or clobetasol+placebo twice daily for 8 days. Efficacy assessments were performed at baseline and 8days after termination of therapy, according to hand eczema severity index (HECSI) and visual analogue scale (VAS). Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software, version 18.0 and statistical tests including paired T-test and independent T-test.

Results: Overall, 56 patients completed our study. Out of them 32 were male and 24 were female. The reduction of HECSI score and VAS was statistically significant in the treatment and placebo group (p&le0.05), but differences in HECSI and VAS reduction between treatment and control group were not significant.

Conclusion: Although there is some evidence that doxepin 5% cream is effective in reducing the signs and symptoms of eczematous dermatitis, few trials have been performed. We suggest that in a more extensive clinical trial, the efficacy of this treatment against chronic hand dermatitis be evaluated.

Abstract

Background: Dendrimers are a subset of branched structures that have certain structural order. The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of Polypropylenimine-G2 (PPI-G2) dendrimers in removal of Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus from aqueous solution .

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study , initially dilution of 103 CFU/ml was prepared from each strain of bacteria . Then , different concentrations of dendrimers (0.5, 5, 50 and 500 µg/ml) was added to water . In order to determine the efficiency of dendrimers in removal of bacteria, samples were taken at different times (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min) and were cultured on nutrient agar medium . Samples were incubated for 24 hours at 37 ° C and then the number of colonies was counted .

Results: By the increasment of dendrimer concentration and contact time , the number of bacteria in aqueous solution decreased. In times of 40 , 50 and 60 minutes, and the concentrations of 50 and 500 µg/ml, all kinds of bacteria in aqueous solution were removed . 0.5 µg/ml of dendrimer concentration had not effect in reducing the number of Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis . The effect of dendrimer on gram-negative bacteria was weaker than gram-positive bacteria.

Conclusion: Results of this study indicated that PP I -G2 dendrimer is able to remove Escherichia coli , Proteus mirabilis , Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis in aqueous solution. However, using dendrimers can be considered as a new approach for drinking water disinfection but it requires further wide range studies.

Abstract

Background: Candida albicans is still the main etiologic agent of candidiasis. However, infections of non-albicans Candida species are increasing. Candida dubliniensis is similar to C. albicans phenotypically and must be identified due to the better management of infection. The aim of the present study is to defferentiate and identify Candida species by Duplex PCR for getting an epidemiological data of Candida species among clinical specimens.

Materials and Methods: DNA was extracted using phenol-chloroform method from fresh colonies. Internal Transcribed Spacer region was amplified by polymerase chain reaction using specific primers. Based on differences of bands sizes on agarose gel electrophoresis, species were identified.

Results: Ninety four out of 100 patients (49 males and 51 females) had predisposing factors in the present study. Diabetes (73.4%), use of antibiotic (6.3%), vitamin deficiency (4.3%) were the main predisposing factors. The most specimens belonged to mouth (75%), vagina (5%), and blood (4%). All isolates were identified as C. albicans.

Conclusion: Duplex PCR is a rapid and precise method for the detection and differentiation of Candida species carefully, and in this method, phenotypic tests like germ-tube and chlamydoconidia production, as well as biochemical tests are not required for clinical laboratories that have limited resources and time for response to the patients, and it can replace with the traditional methods.

Abstract
Background: Successful pregnancy depends on the ability of the embryo to achieve appropriate extent of trophoblastic proliferation and invasion into maternal endometrium as well as, once implanted, to induce its own blood supply. Beta Human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), enhances blastocyst implantation, uterine vascularization, and angiogenesis, as well as regulates maintenance of uterine quiescence and immunological adaptation during pregnancy. The β-subunit of hCG is encoded by CGB3, CGB6, CGB5, CGB7 and CGB8 genes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of CGB5-G/C polymorphism and the clinical outcomes in women who underwent IVF-ET procedures.
Materials and Methods: A total of 200 patients undergoing IVF-ET (100 patients with positive and 100 patients with negative IVF-ET outcome) were included in this study. Genotyping of CGB5 at -155G/C polymorphic site was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Statistical analysis was performed using the MedCalc software.
Results: Our findings show that the CC genotype of the CGB5 -155G/C polymorphism is associated with decreased risk of IVF-ET failure (OR=0.29; 95%CI=0.1-0.85; p=0.02). However, the allelic distribution of the CGB5 -155G/C is not significantly different between two groups (χ2=1.46; p=0.22).
Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that CGB5 (-155G/C) CC genotype has a protective effect on IVF-ET outcome. More studies with larger sample sizes on different populations are necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms which can explain the associations found between the GGB5 gene polymorphisms and IVF-ET outcome.
