Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes  is  one  of  the  most  important  problems in  all  countries.  This  study  is  designed  to  determine  the  prevalence  of  diabetes  or  glucose  intolerance  in  central  areas  of  Iran.
Materials  and Methods: In  a  descriptive  study  in  Arak, Isfahan  and  Najafabad  cities, 12514  samples  over  19  years  old  were  selected  by  a  multistage  random  sampling  method. FBs  and  GTT  were  done. Lipid  tests  were  also  done  in  fasting. weight, height  and blood  pressure  of  samples  were  measured  by  standard  methods.  FBs>-126  or  2  hoursglucose >-200  was  considered  diabetes. Fasting  glucose  disturbance  was  considered  with  FBS <126  and  glucose  intolerance  with  2  hours  glucose >-140-200.  Data  was  analyzed  by  SPSS  software, t  test, chi  square  and  Fisher  test.
Results: Of  12514  samples  under  investigation 51.1%  were  female. The  overall  diabetes  incidence  in  urban  and  rural  areas  was  6.7%  and  5.3%  and  in  male  and  female  5.4%  and  7.1%  respectively .Mean  of  blood  glucose  was  increased  by  age  in  both  sexes. This  was also  increased  in  women  of  urban  areas against  women  in  rural  parts.  It  was  also found  that glucose  intolerance, known  diabetes  and  newly  diagnosed  diabetes  was  increased  by  age. More  than  half  of  diabetes  cases  in  all  age  groups  were  newly  diagnosed. Blood  pressure, age, BMI  and  abdominal  obesity  were  higher  in  diabetics  and  those  with  glucose  intolerance. These  problems  were  more  incident  in  women.
Conclusion: Regarding  to  the  fact  that  diabetes  is  one  of  the  major  risk  factors  for  noncommunitable  disease  and  also  its  relative  high  incidence  in  central  areas  of Iran, it  is  necessary  to  have  expanded  programs  for  prevention  and  treatment  diabetes  family  history.

Abstract

Background: Focal dystonia is a chronic disease with unwanted side effects. In addition to physical symptoms, some psychological problems, particularly depression, anxiety and stress are common in patients with focal dystonia. The aim of this study was investigating the effectiveness of medication in comparison to medication plus EMG biofeedback on depression, anxiety and stress in females with chronic focal dystonia.

Materials and Methods: This was an experimental/interventional study with pre, post, and follow-up phases. The sample was consisted of 20 female patients with spasmodic torticollis and 10 patients with blepharospasm. All of the patients have been already diagnosed by neurologist They were randomly selected and assigned into medication and medication plus EMG biofeedback groups. Both of the groups were treated with botulinum toxin type A and the second group in addition to receiving the drug for 10 weeks also participated in 20 sessions of EMG biofeedback treatment. Data were collected through the DASS-42 questionnaire which was completed in the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up phases.

Results: The mean of DASS-42 score in the Medication plus EMG biofeedback group showed a significantly higher decrease compared to the medication group (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The results suggested that medication plus EMG was more effective than medication alone in decreasing depression, anxiety and stress in females with chronic focal dystonia.

Abstract

Background: Recently it is accentuated on the role of psychological symptoms in the course of chronic diseases and applying psychological interventions as complementary interventions. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management, optimism training and conevntional medical therapy on somatic symptoms, perceived stress, illness perception and quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Materials and Methods: In this study, thirty female patients were selected accidentally, and randomly assigned into three groups including cognitive-behavioral stress management(n=10), optimism training(n=10) and conventional medical therapy(n=10). All patients completed Perceived Stress Scale, Illness Perception questionnaire, WHO Quality of Life questionnaire, and Lichtiger Colitis Activity Index. Then, experimental groups participated in 9 sessions of  cognitive-behavioral stress management and optimism training group interventions. Thereafter, three groups answered to scales again. This course was repeated in a 6-mounth follow-up. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data.

Results:  The findings indicated that the effects of two interventions were significant on patient´s illness perception, perceived stress and quality of life however, these interventions did not change somatic symptoms.

Conclusion: Totally, it can be said that psychological interventions such as stress management and optimism training can be effective on improving the psychological symptoms in patients with ulcerative colitis and their cure.

Abstract

Background: MgSo4 (magnesium sulfate) is the first therapeutic line for preeclampsia. Recently, there have been many debates on pain relief property on MgSo4. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of MgSo4 on pain relief after cesarean in preeclampsia parturient

Materials and Methods: In this analytic and cross-sectional clinical trial study, 88 pregnant wowen with mild preeclampsia who received MgSo4 (14g loading dose and 5 g/4h maintenance dose) (n=88, P group), were compared with 88 normal pregnant women(n=88, N group), according to the duration of paim relief and the amount of diclofenac suppository consumption after cesarean section from March 2013 to October 2014. After cesarean section, the assessment of pain relief performed with NRS (numerical rating scale), and diclofenac consumption.

Results: P group had a longer analgesic duration than N group. NRS in P group was significantly longer than N group(6.89 ±3.34 vs. 3.55± 2.13 hr, p=0.0001). The dose of diclofenac suppository in P group was significantly lower than N group (225mg±147 vs. 365.9±92mg, p<0.0001).

Conclusion: Post cesarean pain in preeclamptic group was significantly lower than non-preeclamptic group. This finding is probabley because of MgSo4 administration in preeclamptic group.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Hearing loss (HL) is the most common congenital defect in humans. One or two in thousand newborn babies have prelingual hearing loss. Autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) is the most common form of hereditary deafness. Hearing loss is more common in the developing countries which is due to genetic and environmental (cultural -health factors) reasons. HL has a wide range of clinical demonstrations including: congenital or late onset, conductive or sensory-neural, syndromic or non-syndromic hearing loss. The goal of this project is to determine the portion of the DFNB21 (TECTA) in ARNSHL in families with negative GJB2 gene in Khuzestan province.

Materials and Methods: We studied 21 families with ARNSHL with at least 4 patients and negative for GJB2 mutations from Khuzestan province. Genetic linkage analysis was performed using STR markers linked to DFNB21 locus.

Results: Following genetic linkage analysis and haplotyping, out of 21 families with ARNSHL, one family showed linkage to the DFNB21 (TECTA) locus.

Conclusion: The results of this project confirm other studies in Iran and give insight into the most common loci causing ARNSHL in Iran which could be helpful in research and clinic.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder that leads to hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. Royal jelly is as a bee-collected natural product has diverse biological properties and that is rich in natural antioxidants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of royal jelly on serum glucose and lipids profile in streptozotocin induced type 1 diabetic rats.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 40male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups(8 in each): control, diabetic rats, Glibenclamide, and two groups of royal jelly- treated diabetic. Diabetes was induced in the rats by injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg b.w) intraperitoneally. The royal jelly was gavaged at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg after streptozotocin injection for30 days. At the end of this period, levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and HDL in serum were measured.

Results: Royal jelly and Glibenclamide significantly decreased the levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL in diabetic rats (p<0.01). In addition, significant increase (p<0.01) in HDL level was observed in royal jelly-treating rats in comparison to the diabetic rats.

Conclusion: The results indicated that royal jelly may be used effectively in controlling and attenuating the complications of diabetes. The hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of royal jelly may be due to the presence of antioxidants.

Abstract

Abstract
Background: The use of herbal supplements and exercise training for the treatment of diabetic has increased.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks high intensity interval training and moderate intensity interval training and Aloe vera intake on serum vaspin and insulin resistance in diabetic male rats.
Materials and Methods: During this experimental study, 32 diabetic rats with STZ Wistar were randomly divided into four groups including the control, high intensity interval training +supplement, moderate intensity interval training + supplement and supplement. Training program was planned for 8 weeks and 3 sessions per week. Each session consisted of 6 to 12 periods of 2-minute activity with the intensity of 90% and 60% with one minute rest (speed: 10m/min). In the supplement groups, 300milligrams Aloe vera solution per kilogram of body weight Gavage was given 5 sessions per week for 8 weeks. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Results: The results showed that high and moderate intensity interval training with supplement has no significant effect on the of serum vaspin (p=0.112). High intensity interval training with supplement had significant effects on insulin in diabetic male rats (0.000).
Conclusion: .Based on the findings of this study, it seems that supplementation of Aloe vera with high intensity interval training can have better effects on serum insulin in diabetic rats.
